Taskbar Icons, Commands, and Messages


Taskbar Icons

The WiMAX taskbar icon is located on the lower-right corner of your desktop. This icon changes to show you the current state of WiMAX. The displayed icons are shown next.

Available networks: WiMAX networks are available for connection. This icon is only displayed if you are not connected to a WiMAX network and networks are available. Double-click the icon to open the Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility.


Connecting: When the adapter is connecting to a network, this icon changes (animates) to show a varying number of white arcs.

Searching: When the adapter is searching, the round magnifying glass moves around the icon. Click on the icon to learn more information.

Connected: You are connected. The icon shows the signal quality for the current WiMAX connection.

Wireless radio is turned off: You are not connected. The utility also cannot search for available networks. This may be because the WiMAX On/Off button is turned off, or the wireless switch on your computer (if present) is turned off, or both. Click on the icon to learn more information.

No WiMAX networks are available: No networks are available in the area. If a search is in progress, then this icon may change soon to Available networks. Click on the icon to learn more information.

Problem: A problem exists. WiMAX cannot be used until the problem has been corrected. Click on the icon to learn more information.


Taskbar Menu Commands

Right-click on the Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility icon to access the taskbar commands. The icon is visible on the taskbar, located in the lower right corner of your Windows desktop. The available WiMAX taskbar commands are listed next.

NOTE: The exact commands listed in the Taskbar menu can vary, based on your laptop's hardware configuration and operating system.

Command Description

Configure WiMAX

Click to open the Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility.

WiMAX On

This command turns WiMAX on. For most laptops, WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time. In this case, if WiMAX is on, WiFi is turned off.

WiFi On

This command turns WiFi on. For most laptops, WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time. In this case, if WiFi is on, WiMAX is turned off.

WiFi Off

This command turns WiFi off.

WiMAX Off

This command turns WiMAX off.

WiMAX and WiFi Off This command turns off WiMAX or WiFi (whichever is on).

Connect

Connects to the selected network.

NOTE: This command is unavailable if no network is detected, the WiMAX On/Off button is Off, or the hardware radio switch is off (if present).

Disconnect

Disconnects from currently connected WiMAX network.

NOTE: This command is unavailable if you are not connected.


Tool Tips

Tool tips provide information about the adapter, connection and availability of networks. Tool tips display when you pass the mouse pointer over the taskbar icon. Following are some of the possible tool tips.
Tip Explanation

<Network name> is available to connect.

The named WiMAX network is available for you to connect. This message only displays if you are not currently connected, and only one network is available.

N WiMAX networks are available to connect.

Two or more WiMAX networks are available to connect. This message only displays if you are not currently connected.

Searching for WiMAX networks...

The adapter is currently searching for available WiMAX networks. Progress is indicated.

Searching for <Network name> The adapter is currently searching for a particular WiMAX network. Progress is indicated.

Connecting to <Network name>...

The adapter is currently connecting to the named network.

Connected to: <Network name>...
Acquiring IP address

The adapter is acquiring the IP address. This is necessary for normal network communications.

Connected to <Network name>
Signal: <Excellent>
IP address: <address>

The adapter is connected to the named network. This signal quality is shown. It may range from Poor to Excellent. The internet protocol address is listed for this adapter/connection.

Connected to: <Network name>...
WiMAX has limited or no connectivity.

<Network name> is not available to connect This message displays when a particular network is unavailable for connection.

WiMAX is off.

The wireless radio is off. Turn it on using the WiMAX On / Off button (shown on the utility main window).

The wireless switch is off.

Some laptops have a physical switch that you can use to turn on or off WiMAX and WiFi (the switch affects both). The message indicates that the switch is off. To connect you need to turn it on.

No WiMAX networks are available to connect.

A search has been performed and no networks are available in the area.

Another connection manager application is currently managing WiMAX connections.

This message indicates that another application is controlling the WiMAX adapter and connections. If this message is displayed, you need to remove that program from the computer. Then reboot the computer.

WiMAX is not ready.

This may be caused by one of the following reasons:

  • The WiMAX adapter may be disabled via Windows*. Enable using the Device Manager.
  • The WiMAX adapter is missing.
  • The WiMAX driver and/or software are not working correctly. You may need to reboot the computer.


Desktop Alerts

When user action is required, a desktop alert displays.
Tip Explanation

You are connected to <Network name>. If you have not yet subscribed for WiMAX service with <Network name>, please take this opportunity to do so. Your web browser may open automatically (it could take up to 30 seconds). If not, click here to open it.

You may need to configure your personal firewall to allow access. Click here for more information.

This message is shown whenever you connect to a WiMAX service provider but have not yet subscribed for services with this provider. See Subscribing for WiMAX Service.

WiMAX updates are available. These updates are critical for the normal operation of WiMAX. Do you want to download the updates now?

This message is shown when WiMAX software updates are available for download. Click Yes. If you click Remind Me Later, you will be prompted again, later. After clicking Yes, the WiMAX updates will be downloaded. You should not turn off or disconnect from WiMAX during this download, or the process will not complete.

WiMAX updates are being downloaded. After the download is complete, installation will begin.

In this message window, a progress bar indicates progress. The window closes when complete. If desired, you can click Stop Download to cancel the download. However, you will be asked later to download updates.

WiMAX updates are currently being downloaded. If you disconnect, the download will be stopped. Do you want to disconnect from <Network name>?

Disconnecting WiMAX will stop the WiMAX download and installation will not occur. You will be asked later to download updates. You should click No to this message to let the download complete.

The WiMAX updates are currently being downloaded. If you turn off WiMAX, the download will be stopped. Do you want to turn WiMAX off?

Turning WiMAX off will stop the WiMAX download and installation will not occur. You will be asked later to download updates. You should click No to this message to let the download complete.

The WiMAX updates have been downloaded. Installation will soon begin.

Click OK to install the WiMAX updates. If you click nothing, then the updates will install after 20 seconds.

WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time. Turning on WiFi will disconnect WiMAX. Do you want to turn on WiFi?

For most laptops, WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time. This message is shown whenever you turn on WiFi and WiMAX is connected. If you click Yes, then WiMAX is disconnected and WiFi is turned on. If you click No, WiFi is left off and WiMAX remains connected.

NOTE: You can keep this message from being displayed. See Application Preferences.

WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time. Turning on WiMAX will disconnect and turn off WiFi. You can always turn WiFi back on from this application's WiFi menu. Do you want to turn on WiMAX?

For most laptops, WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time, and one of these alerts will appear if you turn on WiMAX and WiFi is already on. These alerts vary somewhat, based on your current WiFi connection.

If you click Yes, then the following occurs:

  • The WiFi adapter is turned off.
  • If you are connected to a WiFi network, that connection is closed.
  • If WiFi devices are connected to your computer with the Intel® My WiFi Technology application, those devices are disconnected and the application is closed.

If you click No, then WiMAX is left off, the WiFi adapter is left on, and all WiFi connections remain unchanged.

NOTE: You can stop these alert messages from displaying. See Application Preferences.

WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time. Turning on WiMAX will disconnect all WiFi devices connected to your computer and turn off WiFi. You can always turn WiFi back on from this application's WiFi menu. Do you want to turn on WiMAX?

There are currently active network connections (e.g. - Ethernet) that may prevent WiMAX from being successfully activated on your computer. Please disconnect these network connections before clicking Yes below.

Do you want to connect to <Network Service Provider> (or) Do you want to connect to WiMAX?

Other wired connections, such as Ethernet, may interfere with successful WiMAX activation. Please close those connections. Then click Yes at this window.

NOTE: You can stop these alert messages from displaying. See Application Preferences.

WiFi and WiMAX are both on. This may reduce your computer's internet access speed and reliability. To avoid this, you should turn off WiFi when not in use. For instructions on how to turn off WiFi, click here.

Some laptop computers may be configured to allow both WiMAX and WiFi to be turned on simultaneously. This may reduce the speed and reliability of your internet connection. To turn WiFi off, at the main window, click WiFi > Off.

WiFi and WiMAX are both on. This may reduce your computer's internet access speed and reliability. To avoid this, you should turn off WiMAX when not in use. For instructions on how to turn off WiMAX, click here.

Some laptop computers may be configured to allow both WiMAX and WiFi to be turned on simultaneously. This may reduce the speed and reliability of your internet connection. To turn WiMAX off, at the main window, click WiMAX: Off.


Notifications

Notifications are displayed when the state of a connection has changed (for example, connected or disconnected), or WiMAX networks have become available to connect. For most of these, action on your part is not necessary. You can stop most of these notifications from displaying. See Applications Preferences.
Tip Explanation

WiMAX has limited or no connectivity. You may not be able to access the internet until this issue is resolved. Click this message for more information.

This message is displayed when the WiMAX adapter has not detected an IP address from the network. Normal network communication is not possible without an IP address. Try the following methods to resolve this problem:

  • Disconnect from the network. Wait a few seconds and then try to reconnect to the WiMAX network.
  • Reboot the computer. After the reboot is complete, be sure WiMAX is turned on. Then try to connect to the WiMAX network.
  • For advanced users: Use ipconfig to reset and acquire an IP address.
  • Contact support for this network service provider. See Support.

This computer supports WiMAX wireless broadband communications.

This notification appears shortly after you start your computer. After you connect to WiMAX, this notification will no longer appear. See What is WiMAX? for more information.

One or more WiMAX networks are within range of this computer. To see the list and connect, click this message.

Clicking this message opens the Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility main window and shows the available WiMAX network(s). From there, you can connect to WiMAX. See Connecting to a WiMAX Network for more information.

<Network name> is available to connect. To connect, click this message.

Your preferred network is available to connect. Your preferred network is the last network the computer connected to. Click the message to connect, or right-click the taskbar icon and click Connect.

Signal: <Excellent>
IP address:<address>

Displays when the adapter connects to the named network. This signal quality is shown. It may range from Poor to Excellent. The internet protocol address is listed for this adapter/connection.

Disconnected from: <Network name> Click this message for more information.

You have disconnected from the WiMAX network. This may be for any one of the following reasons:

  • You intentionally disconnected from WiMAX. For example, you clicked WiMAX Off or Disconnect at the main window.
  • You are in an area where WiMAX signal quality is poor. Check the signal quality indicator; the number of green bars increases with greater signal quality and decreases with less. To reconnect to WiMAX, move to an area of greater signal quality. For advanced users, see RSSI for more about signal quality.
  • You are in an area where WiMAX signal quality is poor. You may be too close to a wireless access point or microwave oven, both of which can interfere with your WiMAX connection. Make sure such devices are located at least 7ft (2 meters) from your WiMAX adapter. For advanced users, see CINR for more about signal quality.
  • You turned on WiFi. For most laptops, WiFi and WiMAX cannot operate at the same time and turning on WiFi will disconnect your WiMAX connection. Also, turning on WiMAX will disconnect your WiFi connection. See Turning WiMAX On and Off.
  • You turned off the wireless switch. On some laptops, a physical switch lets you turn on or off radio. If present, turn the switch back on. See Turning WiMAX On and Off.
Disconnected from <Network name> because a network domain name mismatch was detected. Click this message for more information. This error indicates that this network operator name and certificate do not match the network operator name that has been previously configured. You may try to reconnect, but if this error persists, contact the network service provider for help.
Unable to connect to <Network name> because the network rejected the connection attempt. Click this message for more information. The network service provider rejected connection to this network. You may try again, but if this error persists, contact the network service provider for help.
Disconnected from <Network name> because your WiMAX subscription is no longer valid. Click this message for more information. Your subscription to this WiMAX network service provider is expired or disabled. You may need to renew your subscription with this service provider. If you are not able to renew your subscription, or if after renewing you are still not able to connect, please contact this WiMAX service provider.
