JDickinson Installing the Sound and GamePort Drivers for CMI8330 Soundcard on Windows_XP (Best viewed in Ariel 10 fonts) NOTE: There are no Joystick (GamePort) or MPU-401 MIDI Drivers available from CMI for Windows_XP, you must use Windows_XP generic drivers, pay careful attention for installing these items. These instructions were compiled after much frustration, trial and error to finally get them to work. Finally worked for me, hope they work for you. Installing and configuring the Joystick was the greatest challenge, you may have to play around with your hardware settings to finally get it to work, but then hopefully maybe not. Let your system fully load without trying to install any sound or game port controllers the wizard may discover and want to install, hit cancel each time. Go to "Device Manager" (from Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager) and uninstall any and all refrences to CMI8330 (Usually in ? Other Devices, ? CMI8330, Audio Adapter. ? CMI8330, Audio Adapter. ? CMI8330, Audio Adapter. ? CMI8330, Audio Adapter. (Right Click on item, Left Click Uninstall, Left Click OK for each item.) When all are uninstalled close all windows back to (or open) Control Panel. Open, (double click) Add Hardware, Click, Next. Select, Install from a list or Specific Location (Advanced).. Click, Next. Select, Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install. Click, Next. Select, Sound, video and game controllers. Click, Next. Select, Have Disk. BROWSE to directory or floppy disk containing these drivers and open CMEDIA.INF Click, OK (For Information Only, Untick [remove the arrow] from: Show compatibleHardware. The menu should show: CM8330 SB16 Driver (WDM) ** C_Media CM8330 Audio Driver (WDM) ** C_Media CM8338 Audio Driver (WDM) C_Media CM8737 Audio Driver (WDM) C_Media Game-Port ** ** you will want to install these Drivers). Tick [replace the arrow] in: Show compatibleHardware. CM8330 SB16 Driver (WDM) should be hi-lighted. Click, Next. Click, Continue Anyway. Let Installation complete, if the wizard indicates there was a problem, start over from the beginning. (Go to "Device Manager" etc.) Click, Finish. When installed OK, the Wizard will recognize other CMI8330 items to be installed but not necessarily in the following order. C-MEDIA GAME PORT. There are no drivers from C-Media (on the drivers disk) to support a Game Port, it uses the Generic Windows_XP Standard Game Port Driver. Select, Install from a list or Specific Location (Advanced).. Click, Next. Select, Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install. Click, Next. IMPORTANT FROM HERE TO GAME PORT INSTALL IS COMPLETE. Untick, [remove the arrow] from: Show compatibleHardware. Select, (Standard System Devices), from Left Box. Select, Standard Game Port, from Right Box. Click, Next. Let installation complete. Click, Finish. Wizard will recognize the next item to be installed. CMI8330 AUDIO ADAPTER. Select, Install from a list or Specific Location (Advanced).. Click, Next. Select, Don't Search. IF C-MEDIA MPU-401 DRIVER (WDM) IS HIGHLIGHTED There are no drivers from C-Media (on the drivers disk) to support MPU-401 for Windows_XP it uses the Generic Windows_XP Standard MPU-401 Driver. Untick, [remove the arrow] from: Show compatibleHardware. Select, (Microsoft), from Left Box. Select, MPU-401 Compatible Midi Device, from Right Box. Click, Next. Let installation complete. Click, Finish. Wizard will recognize the next item to be installed. C-MEDIA CM8330 AUDIO DRIVER (WDM). Select, Install from a list or Specific Location (Advanced).. Click, Next. Select, Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install. Click, Next. C-Media CM8330 Audio Driver (WDM) should be Hi-lighted, if not, Untick, [remove the arrow] from: Show compatibleHardware and select it. Click, Next Click, Continue Anyway. Let Installation complete. Click, Finish. This should finish the installation, A Pop-Up box will indicate: The Wizard found the following Hardware etc. Devicess Installed. CM8330 SB16 Driver (WDM) C-Media CM8330 Audio Driver (WDM) MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Driver Standard Game Port Click, Finish. you may have to Re-Boot your computer for the changes to take effect. Final Check..........................Go to "Control Panel". Double Click on Game Controllers, try and "Add" a Game Controller, if you can all is OK. and there are no conflicts. If Conflicts exist, See NOTES at the end. Double Click on Sounds and Audio Devices, if all is OK. you should be able to test sounds, and the following defaults should exist. VOLUME: C-Media 8330 (Tick, Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar) to be able to adjust volume from there. AUDIO: Test some sounds to make sure they are working. Sound Playback: Default=C-Media 8330 Optional=CM8330 SB16 Sound Recording: Default=C-Media 8330 Optional=CM8330 SB16 Midi Music Playback: Default=Microsoft GS Waveable SW Synthesizer Optional=MPU-401 FM Synthesizer VOICE: Voice Playback: Default=C-Media 8330 Optional=CM8330 SB16 Voice Recording: Default=C-Media 8330 Optional=CM8330 SB16 NOTES: Depending on your computer's hardware you may have to re-configure some items, most notably the Joystick (Game Controllers). Items that may have to be changed, I.O. Address. DMA IRQ To check for and resolve conflicts: Go to "Device Manager" Right Click on Device with Conflict (or is not working) Left Click Properties Select Resources Select a new configuration number (usually 00001) Click on each item and select a non conflicting value When finished click OK Hopefully this will have cleared up any conflicts and your Sound card and Game Controller are now working. rrm
